Hi. My name is Laurel and I'm a junior from Auburn, New York studying International Relations. During the Spring 2018 Maxwell-in-Washington Program I interned at the White House for the Office of the United States Trade Representative.
This was my first internship, but my experience has been great so far. My co-workers are so nice, my work is challenging, and I'm developing skills that I can apply to my future career. I have enjoyed learning about U.S. Trade Policy because it is a subject I had little knowledge of prior to my internship. This program has given me the opportunity to not only challenge myself, but also make new friends and contacts that I would not have gained elsewhere. My internship has made me rethink my dislike of economics, and I am now thinking about practicing trade law in the future.
My favorite thins are DC are the scenery and food. I pass a park everyday on the way to work, and as for the food, there are so many meal options. Definitely a change of pace from the Syracuse grub! My advice to incoming students is to apply to many different places even if you think you may not hear back or don't know a lot about the area of practice. That's what I had done, and it's been great.
