Resolution Regarding Dean Search Process

Passed October 2016

The Maxwell Faculty Council expresses its gratitude to Provost Wheatly for meeting with the faculty of the Maxwell School on September 23 to explain the procedures of the Maxwell School Dean search, and your decision-making regarding the June 2016 appointment of David Van Slyke to a two-year term as Dean.  We appreciate your willingness to answer questions and respond to concerns of the faculty about the process.

The Maxwell Faculty Council believes the concerns expressed by faculty members at the meeting about the closed and non-transparent manner in which the search was concluded and a Dean’s appointment was made have merit.  It is our view that greater efforts could have been made to solicit broad faculty involvement and input in the final stages of the search process, and that greater openness and transparency would have been consistent with traditions of faculty governance at Syracuse University. We respectfully request that in the case of future Dean’s appointments the faculty of the School be involved fully in the process, including in the already-announced 360-degree performance review to be conducted in two years.

The Maxwell Faculty Council looks forward to working with you and Dean Van Slyke as we collectively move forward in our shared goal of furthering the multiple missions of the School.
