  these questions we assemble a unique dataset that\nmatches all\nlabor con
 dition applications (LCAs)-\nthe\nfirst step towards H-1B visas for skille
 d\nforeign-born workers in the U.S. - with firm-level data on publicly-tra
 ded\nU.S.\nfirms (from Compustat).\nOur identification is based on the sha
 rp reduction in the\nannual H-1B\ncap that took place in 2004\, combined w
 ith information on the degree of\ndependency on H-1B visas at the firm lev
 el as\nin Kerr and Lincoln (2010). The main\nresult of\nthis paper is that
 \, if the cap on H-1B visas were relaxed\, a select group of\nfirms would\
 nexperience gains in average labor productivity\, firm size\, and profits.
  These\nfirms are\nheavy users of H-1B workers - they belong to the top qu
 intile among filers of\nLCA applications.\nWe also find that the results a
 re driven by the firms that conduct\nR&amp\;amp\;D and\nby those in the ma
 nufacturing sector\, which have the highest average R&amp\;amp\;D\nexpendi
 tures in our data. These empirical\nfindings are consistent with a monopol
 istic\ncompetition model with heterogeneous firms\nwhere productivity is a
