DESCRIPTION:The Moynihan Institute’s Middle Eastern Studies Program present
s Nermin Allam from Rutgers University-Newark for a talk in honor of Inter
national Women’s Day.&nbsp\;This talk will examine how women’s participati
on in the 2011 Egyptian uprising has influenced their gender consciousness
and feminist subjectivities in the afterlife of activism. The uprising wa
s an affective encounter that created affective attachments to gender equa
lity and women’s bodily rights.Drawing from the literature on gender and t
he consequences of social movements\, Allam will show how women’s encounte
rs with gender-based violence in protests and exposures to new social and
political networks influenced their personal and professional lives. Build
ing on semi-structured interviews with women protestors\, the presentation
will focus on two examples from women’s biographies: women’s decision to
remove the hijab and to move out of the family\, and the decision by some
protestors to change their careers and work in the area of women’s rightsT
he project is the first to document the afterlife of women’s engagement in
the 2011 uprising. It expands understanding of movement’s impacts on part
icipants following defeated protests and under nondemocratic regimes.Light
Refreshments will be served. This event is co-sponsored by the Political S
cience Department.&nbsp\;Speaker opinions and statements are their own and
do not imply endorsement&nbsp\;by the MESP\, Syracuse University or its c
onstituent schools and colleges.Nermin Allam is the director of the Women’
s and Gender Studies Program and an associate professor of political scien
ce at Rutgers University-Newark. She is a nonresident fellow in the Middle
