How\ndo people become political activists when historical experience destroys their\nfaith in transformat ive capacities of all political action? \; Drawing on long-term fieldw ork in\nBosnia-Herzegovina\, this talk explores the challenges faced by a new generation\nof political activists in the capital city\, who have been struggling to respond\nto the multifaceted political paralysis that follo wed the end of the war.\nFocusing on “Citizen Action\,” a multigenerationa l\, multiethnic activist\norganization that grew out of the 2008 protests for governmental\naccountability\, I show how Bosnian activists came to un derstand their own\nefforts as a form of necessary foolishness\, “a run on the windmills” which was\nbound to fail and yet also formed a type of an ethical practice connected to\nthe very possibility of imagining the futur e. In merging ethics and pragmatics\,\nin this talk I call for a careful\, ethnographically and historically sensitive\nrereading of the figure of p olitical activist.
