 ies present: \n\nLarisa\nKurtović\,\nAssistant\nProfessor of Anthropology\
,\nUniversity\nof OttawaFool’s\nErrand: The Ethics and Pragmatics of Polit
ical Activism in Postwar\nBosnia-Herzegovina\n\nHow\ndo people become poli
tical activists when historical experience destroys their\nfaith in transf
ormative capacities of all political action?&nbsp\; Drawing on long-term f
ieldwork in\nBosnia-Herzegovina\, this talk explores the challenges faced
by a new generation\nof political activists in the capital city\, who have
been struggling to respond\nto the multifaceted political paralysis that
followed the end of the war.\nFocusing on “Citizen Action\,” a multigenera
tional\, multiethnic activist\norganization that grew out of the 2008 prot
ests for governmental\naccountability\, I show how Bosnian activists came
 to understand their own\nefforts as a form of necessary foolishness\, “a r
un on the windmills” which was\nbound to fail and yet also formed a type o
f an ethical practice connected to\nthe very possibility of imagining the
future. In merging ethics and pragmatics\,\nin this talk I call for a care
ful\, ethnographically and historically sensitive\nrereading of the figure
of political activist.\n\n\n\nLarisa\nKurtović is\nan Assistant Professor
