Abstract: We integrate the Diamond a
nd Burdett-Mortensen models of job search to account for endogenous adopti
on of work conditions that exact different productive efficiencies\, on-th
e-job search capabilities\, and work disutilities. The properties of equil
ibrium in this unified setting are examined\, and the resulting insights s
hed new light on labor markets with jobs controversially referred to as sw
eatshop jobs: Can inefficient sweatshop technologies survive market select
ion? Do sweatshop jobs pay a compensating differential? Are sweatshop work
ers worse off than other workers in overall value terms? What does a ban o
n sweatshops mean in terms of unemployment\, wages\, distribution\, and ef
ficiency?
