DESCRIPTION:Moynihan Institute of Global Affairs&nbsp\;Trade\, Development
and Political Economy presentsInternational Climate\nAgreements and the Sc
ream of GretaAuthors: Giovanni Maggi and Robert Staiger The world is in im
mediate peril\, as countries are not doing\nenough to keep Earth's tempera
ture from rising to near-catastrophic levels\, and\nvarious attempts at in
ternational cooperation have failed. Why is this problem\nso intractable?
Can we expect an 11th-hour solution to the problem? Will some\nof the coun
tries\, or even all\, succumb on the equilibrium path? We address\nthese q
uestions through a formal model that emphasizes the role of two major\niss
ues: the intra-temporal externalities that a country's policies exert on\n
other countries\, and the inter-temporal externalities that the current\ng
eneration's policies exert on future generations. We examine the interacti
on\nbetween these two issues and the extent to which international agreeme
 nts can\nmitigate the problem.Giovanni Maggi&nbsp\;Yale UniversityGiovanni
