DESCRIPTION:The Moynihan Institute’s Study of Global Politics series presen
ts a a book talk with author and Syracuse University professor Ryan Griffi
ths.Book Abstract:How many independent states and state systems existed in
the 19th century? How were they structured and what was their fate? We ma
ke three core contributions in the book. First\, we catalogue the number o
f independent states since 1816\, and we detail the regional patterns in s
tate birth and state death.&nbsp\;Indeed\, we document quantitatively the
large number of states that were extinguished as a consequence of European
colonialism and the global enclosure. Second\, we develop a theoretical a
nd conceptual framework for comparing state systems\, and show variation a
cross four regions: East Asia\, South Asia\, maritime Southeast Asia\, and
West Africa. Third\, we examine the effects that war\, trade\, and intera
ction capacity have on state formation. This book is co-authored by Charles
  R. Butcher (Norwegian University of Science and Technology).Ryan Griffith
s focuses on the dynamics of secession and the study of sovereignty\, stat
e systems and international order. He teaches a variety of courses in inte
rnational relations. His two recent books include: (1)&nbsp\;The Disunited
States: Threats of Secession in Red and Blue America and Why They Won't W
 ork&nbsp\;(Oxford University Press\, 2025)\; and (2)&nbsp\;Before Coloniza
tion: Non-Western States and Systems in the Nineteenth Century&nbsp\;(Colu
mbia University Press\, 2025\, with Charles Butcher). Previously\, he taug
ht at both the University of Sydney in Australia and at John Hopkins Unive
rsity. He earned a Ph.D. in international relations and comparative politi
cs at Columbia University in 2010.
