 o depriving human rights activists of their nationality\,\ndetaining civil
  society leaders\, and in some cases\, engaging in targeted\nkillings. Thi
 s includes some countries that\, until recently\, were considered\nconsoli
 dated democracies. Lana Baydas\, Senior Fellow at the Center for\nStrategi
 c and International Studies (CSIS)\, will discuss the&nbsp\;major threats\
 nand drivers of closing civic space\, as well as key responses and strateg
 ies\nalready underway to make civil society more resilient and sustainable
 .Lana Baydas is a senior\nfellow with the CSIS Human Rights Initiative. Pr
 ior to joining CSIS\, she worked\nas both an academic and a practitioner i
 n the fields of human rights\, gender\nequality\, development\, and intern
 ational humanitarian law for the last 16 years\,\nholding posts with the U
 nited Nations\, Crisis Action\, the International\nCommittee of the Red Cr
 oss\, and the American University in Cairo. She holds a\nPh.D. and LL.M. i
 n public international law from the University of Glasgow in\nScotland and
  a B.A. in political science from the American University of Beirut\nin Le
