 s on former\nGreen Beret Major Jim Gant\, the so-called "Lawrence of Afgha
 nistan"\nand author of "One Tribe at a Time\," one of the most influential
  and\nwidely cited papers on counterinsurgency over the last decade\, and 
 a widely\npublicized&nbsp\;memoir\, American Spartan. Gant's vision of the
  Afghan\npeople and of his own role in countering the gains of the Taliban
  was filtered\nthrough a lens that came more from his own self-conception 
 and self-promotion\nas a modern-day Indian Fighter than from an understand
 ing of the dynamics of\ncontemporary Afghan society. This talk considers s
 ome of the ways in which the\nAmerican involvement in Afghanistan has been
  shaped by tropes appropriated from\nthe Cowboys\, Cavalry\, and Custer my
 thos of the American frontier\, as well as by\na failure at every level an
 d every stage to engage with Afghan society on its\nown terms.
