DESCRIPTION:The Tanner Lecture Series on Ethics\, Citizenship\, and Public
Responsibility\, will host Phil Klay\, Dartmouth College graduate and Unit
ed States Marine\nCorps Veteran. Klay is the author of&nbsp\;Redeployment\
, winner of the 2014\nNational Book Award. His work provides a powerful co
llection of stories that\ntakes readers to the front lines of the wars in
Iraq and Afghanistan. His newly\nreleased novel\,&nbsp\;Missionaries\, off
ers a meticulously\nresearched bird’s-eye depiction of the remote yet inte
rconnected ways that\nAmerican-sponsored wars are waged across the globe.
Among its many early\naccolades\, it was named a “favorite book” by former
President Obama. For more\ninformation on the speaker\, please visit www.
prhspeakers.com. American war today is in a strange place. On the one\nhan
d\, America just withdrew its last ground troops from Afghanistan\, seemin
gly\nbringing a twenty-year war to an end. But even as he announced the wi
thdrawal\,\nPresident Biden promised that we’d keep killing American enemi
 es there\, using\n“over-the-horizon” strike capabilities. This creates a s
trange situation for\nAmericans\, largely protected from the harsh consequ
ences of war\, and yet\ncitizens of a country using lethal force across th
e globe. We generally find\nout about the extent of our involvement only w
hen US soldiers die\, resulting in\na bizarre circumstance for Americans t
rying to understand their citizenship\,\nand their humanity\, in relation
to the killing done in our name. What does it\nmean to be a citizen of a c
ountry that is not at peace\, but doesn’t seem to\nbelieve it’s at war? Kl
ay’s speech will try to offer some answers to that\nquestion.A book signin
