DESCRIPTION:11am-1pm – Panel discussion on “Culture and Media: Vernacular\,
  Watchdog or Propaganda?” Newhouse I Room 120 The panel discussion will br
 ing together a diverse group of speakers to explore the role and importanc
 e of cultural sensitivity in media representations. Speakers with differen
 t backgrounds will present their views on the success and shortcomings of 
 media as a tool of (mis)representation. As posed in the title\, our panel 
 discussion will revolve around how the usage of the media is key in determ
 ining its nature. Our three confirmed panelists are: Mr Terry Anderson: Cu
 rrently a visiting professor at the Newhouse School\, Mr Anderson is a wor
 ld renowned reporter and journalist. He joined the Associated Press upon g
 raduating in the early seventies and reported from Asia and Africa before 
 being appointed the chief Mideast correspondent in Lebanon in 1983. Dr Sha
 na Gadarian: Dr Gadarian is an assistant professor of Political Science at
  the Maxwell School. Gadarian is an expert on American politics\, politica
 l psychology\, political communication\, public opinion\, experimental met
 hods. Her field of interest relates to that of the use of media for politi
 cal communication and anxiety campaigns. Dr Gadarian earned her PhD in pol
 itical Science from Princeton University. Shatha Al Harazi: Shatha is a jo
 urnalist currently working for the Yemen Times Newspaper- the only English
  newspaper in Yemen. She focuses on reporting on human and political right
 s activities in Yemen. She is currently in The Maxwell School for the Lead
 ers for Democracy Fellows Program which is a 3-month program funded by the
  Department of State for 20-25 young civic leaders from the Middle East an
 d North Africa. Art Exhibit: Cultures &amp\; I Our art exhibition will be 
 composed of personal photographs submitted from Maxwell Students reflectin
 g their own culture or a culture they are interested in. The photographs c
 an be ones taken in the student's hometown or any photograph that they hav
 e taken during traveling that they think reflects and represents how they 
 perceived a culture. Those photographs respond to the theme of “Culture &a
 mp\; I”.The photographs will be displayed along a commons area where every
 one can view them. We are offering a $75 prize for the picture that gets t
 he highest amount of votes. 5pm-7pm – Cultural Fair Giffford Auditoruim\, 
 Huntington Beard Crouse Hall The fair seeks to provide a forum for multicu
 ltural student and community organizations to promote cross-cultural commu
 nication\, multicultural education\, and an appreciation of cultural diver
 sity through performing arts
