DESCRIPTION:Syracuse University's South Asia Center announces its FLAS (For
 eign Language and Area Studies) Fellowship Competition for Summer 2013 and
  Academic Year 2013-14. The Foreign Language and Area Studies Fellowship (
 FLAS) Program\, funded by the U.S. Department of Education under Title VI\
 , assists students in pursuing training in order to acquire a high level o
 f competence in one or more languages critical to national needs of the Un
 ited States\, and a fuller understanding of the areas\, regions\, or count
 ries in which that language is commonly used. The Moynihan Institute of Gl
 obal Affairs at Syracuse University's Maxwell School houses the South Asia
  Center through which these fellowships are administered. Eligibility is r
 estricted to undergraduates and graduates who are U.S. citizens or permane
 nt residents AND who are enrolled full-time in a program of study at Syrac
 use University that includes intensive foreign language and area studies c
 oursework or dissertation work that is enhanced by foreign language traini
 ng. Undergraduate applicants must have completed at least a year of colleg
 e-level coursework in the language of study so that they are eligible to e
 nroll at the intermediate level or above. Academic Year 2013-14 Fellowship
 s - Deadline: January 31\, 2013 The South Asia Center requests application
 s from qualified undergraduate and graduate students who wish to enhance t
 heir knowledge of a South Asian language to complement their current progr
 am of study. Languages offered include: Hindi-Urdu and Farsi (if used for 
 historical research). Academic year fellowships consist of a scholarship o
 f $10\,000 towards the cost of tuition and $5\,000 towards living expenses
  for undergraduates\; graduate students receive 24 credits of tuition and
