DESCRIPTION:&nbsp\;The Dean’s Offices of the Maxwell School and the iSchool
  are pleased to present the following interdisciplinary development opport
 unity for Maxwell and iSchool graduate students. The workshop\, led by Rob
 ert Porter\, Director of Research Development at the University of Tenness
 ee\, will focus on NSF and NIH grants that support doctoral students and p
 ostdoctoral fellows as they transition through critical career stages\, fr
 om early graduate study to the doctoral dissertation\, the initial postdoc
 toral fellowship\, and on to becoming an independent investigator. We will
  examine the purpose and structure of NSF’s Graduate Fellowship programs a
 nd its Doctoral Dissertation Improvement Grants. NIH funding mechanisms su
 ch as F awards\, K awards\, and the new Pathway to Independence program wi
 ll be described. Requirements unique to career development proposals will 
 be specified\, and successful proposals will be used to illustrate princip
 les of effective writing. Topics to be discussed include: Choosing the app
 ropriate award track for your career stage\; Anatomy of a typical career a
 ward proposal\; Understanding the grant review process\; Contacting grant
