DESCRIPTION:The Moynihan Institute of Global Affairs and the Middle Eastern
Studies Program is proud to host Jocelyne Cesari\, Ph.D.\, for a virtual
talk on International Women's Day.The commonly held picture of the Muslima
h is the black or blue clad woman under the yolk of males. Jocelyne Cesari
will go beyond this dominant perception to restore the agency of Muslim w
omen. Her talk will highlight the diversity of religious positions on the
question of women rights. It will argue that there is no radical incompati
bility between Islamic prescriptions and the Individual Rights of women bu
t that the perception of such a convergence is obstructed by patriarchal c
ultures and politicization of Islam across Muslim countries and among Musl
 im minorities.
