<p>Life environmentalism (seikatsu kankyo shugi 生活環境主義) is a set of \ntheo
ries and policy approaches to resolve local environmental problems\, \nwhi
ch originally emerged in the 1980s in Japan. Some of its main tenets \nres
emble the claims of contemporary Anglo-American social science \nstudies\,
and may no longer appear as novel. Nevertheless\, I will \ndemonstrate th
at we can still learn useful lessons about what it means \nto build theori
es and policies by taking historical geographical \ncontexts seriously\, a
s well as about our deep-rooted assumptions about \nsocio-environmental pr
 oblems and solutions. </p>
