 chitect Joseph Allen Stein fled the US in 1950 because\nof the blacklist. 
 Three years later he was teaching in Calcutta and starting\narguably the l
 argest architecture and engineering firm in the country\, where he\nwould 
 work for 45 more years.&nbsp\; Stein’s\nbuildings are monuments of newly i
 ndependent India\, although his legacy\, and\nthat of fellow Indian and fo
 reign architects from those decades\, is now\nthreatened by enormous polit
 ical and social changes. \n\nLawrence Chua\, Assistant Professor of Archit
 ecture at\nSyracuse University\, will be the discussant.&nbsp\;Jeff Chusid
 Professor\, Department of City and Regional Planning\n\nCornell University
 Jeffrey M.\nChusid is an architect and planner with current research inter
 ests that include\nthe fate of historic resources in areas of cultural exc
 hange and conflict\, the\nconservation of modernist architecture in India 
 (especially the work of Joseph\nAllen Stein)\, historic cements\, and sust
 ainable development. Chusid has\nconsulted on public policy\, resource con
 servation\, and urban design for diverse\ncommunities such as Shanghai\, C
 hina\; Sevastopol\, Ukraine\; Levuka\, Fiji\; and\nBastrop\, Texas. He has
  also consulted on building and landscape preservation\nfor numerous museu
 ms including the Huntington and Hearst Castle. Chusid\nreceived his A.B. i
 n environmental design and his M.Arch. from the University\nof California–
 Berkeley in 1978 and 1982\, and has taught at Harvard\, the\nUniversity of
  Southern California\, the University of Texas at Austin\, and\nCornell Un
 iversity\, where he has been the chair of the department of City and\nRegi
