 ts independence in 1963\, its\nsocio-political and economic development ha
 s been slow due to poor leadership\nby successive regimes. The independenc
 e constitution favored autocratic style\nof government\, where a lot of po
 wer and authority was vested at the Presidency\nwithout strong institution
 s to hold it accountable. This led to bad governance\nand prompted Kenyans
  to endure a long and painful protest for change. A major\nstep towards th
 e goal was achieved last year (August 2010)\, when a\ncomprehensive new co
 nstitution was passed\, which is not only expected to\naddress bad leaders
 hip and governance issues but also guarantee people's\nfundamental rights 
 and freedoms. Its successful implementation can be\nreplicated by other de
 veloping and transitioning countries. William Tengecha is\nan EMPA candida
 te who is interested in the study of human rights\, transparency\nand good
  governance while pursuing his degree at Maxwell. He is currently the\nPri
 ncipal Human Rights Officer for the Kenya National Commission on Human\nRi
 ghts in Nairobi. He’s held a variety of other positions dealing with human
 \nrights and capacity building. He has a bachelor’s degree in Sociology an
 d Business\nStudies from Kenyatta University in Kenya. When: Tuesday\, Nov
