International attention has also been\ndirected at the exclusionary Citizenship Amendment Act of 2019 pushed through\nby the ruling Hindutva-aligned Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP)\, the aggressive\ncrackdown on all forms of democratic dissent\, an d the intimidation and\nimprisonment of journalists\, human rights groups and activists working to\nempower marginalized caste and tribal communitie s. This overall erosion of\ndemocratic practices and freedoms in India has been noted by global research\nnetworks. There has also been some useful scholarship\, journalism and\ncommunity-based activism on the links betwee n Hindutva and racism and\ncaste-ism. We need now to develop a comprehensi ve understanding of Hindutva and\nits global implications through its diff erent iterations in the large Indian\nDiaspora and its potential for build ing links with other supremacist\nideologies\, especially as Hindutva grou ps expand their influence well beyond\nIndia.\n\n \;\n\nThe BJP and\ni ts various affiliate groups have been adept at building connections with t he\nvast Hindu diaspora\, particularly in the United States\, the United K ingdom\, and\nCanada. This reach has contributed materially and ideologica lly to the\nstrengthening of Hindutva in India. Moreover even as such grou ps have leveraged\nracialized minority protections in\, for instance\, the US\, they have continued\nto support caste-discriminatory practices and h ave found common cause with far\nright and white supremacist groups in Eur ope and the US.\n\n \;\n\nIt is also\nimportant to recognize the econo mic turmoil unleashed by the authoritarian\neconomic policies and policy-m aking framework of the BJP government\, including\nthe failed demonetizati on policies and the ill-conceived agricultural reform\npolicies. Such erra tic and draconian policy making has led to stalled economic\ngrowth\, dang erous declines in basic living standards\, and loss of protections\nfor th e most vulnerable labor and agricultural communities in India.\n\n \;\ n\nThis\nconference will convene panels on a variety of interlinked topics that address\nthe threat and power of Hindutva. Scholars\, journalists\, and activists will\nexamine the historical development of Hindutva\, the f ascist dimensions of the\nideology\, its alignment with other supremacist movements and define all that is\nat stake across a range of political\, s ocio-cultural\, and economic issues. We\nalso aim for the conference to be a space for examining the history of dissent\nand resistance against Hind utva. Dalit and Feminist traditions have long\nresisted the singular narra tive of Hinduism adopted by Hindu Supremacists. A\nbroader coalition of ac tivists from progressive communities have mobilized to\nenable both materi al and ideological divestment from Hindutva. Drawing\ninspiration from suc h collectivities\, we expect to develop resources for\nanti-Hindutva pedag ogy and organizing in educational and cultural institutions\neverywhere.\n \n \;\n\nhttps://www.eventbrite.com/e/dismantling-global-hindutva-conf erence-tickets-166698737411?fbclid=IwAR0u0fL5zkh3U2dPqhh551iVtL9L6gKKpBd8A e7HUCY3EJUnyEZR-euCyCk\nFor more information or to request additional acco mmodation arrangements\, please contact Emera Bridger Wilson\, elbridge@sy r.edu.
