 s addressed end of life care as an area of focus for cost savings and syst
 ems improvement – spawning the popular discussion of “Death Panels”. This 
 talk would orient the discussion to reality and focus on how the health ca
 re system and the legal system has evolved to support an individual’s abil
 ity to make informed decisions about what kind of medical care and treatme
 nt they want at the end of life in that context as well as what impact imp
 roved end of life care may have on the health care delivery system. The po
 licy changes that are necessary to achieve an improved end of life care sy
