DESCRIPTION:Moynihan Institute of Global Affairs&nbsp\;Trade\, Development
and Political Economy presentsInterdependence of\nTrade Policies in Genera
l EquilibriumIf governments are\nbanned from using certain trade policy in
struments\, they may resort to other\ninstruments to compensate for their
lost policy space. Using a multi-industry\ngeneral-equilibrium Ricardian t
rade model the authors find that: (i)\nRestricting export subsidies/taxes
leads to trade liberalization\, but\nrestricting import tariffs in isolati
on has no such effect\; (ii) If export\nsubsidies are already restricted\,
negotiated tariff cuts in a subset of\nindustries lead to unilateral cuts
in other industries\; and (iii) A free trade\nagreement that precludes th
e use of trade taxes may lead to the adoption of\nwasteful trade barriers
by welfare-maximizing governments. Fitting our model to\ntrade data for 40
major countries\, we show that these effects are\nquantitatively signific
