 he Foreign Language and Area Studies Fellowship (FLAS)\nProgram\, funded b
 y the U.S. Department of Education under Title VI\, assists\nstudents in p
 ursuing training in order to acquire a high level of competence in\none or
  more languages critical to national needs of the United States\, and a\nf
 uller understanding of the areas\, regions\, or countries in which that la
 nguage\nis commonly used. The Moynihan Institute of Global Affairs at Syra
 cuse\nUniversity's Maxwell School houses the South Asia Center through whi
 ch these\nfellowships are administered.&nbsp\; Eligibility is restricted t
 o undergraduates and\ngraduates who are U.S. citizens or permanent residen
 ts AND who are enrolled\nfull-time in a program of study at Syracuse Unive
 rsity that includes intensive\nforeign language and area studies coursewor
 k or dissertation work that is\nenhanced by foreign language training.&nbs
 p\;\nUndergraduate applicants must have completed at least a year of\ncoll
 ege-level coursework in the language of study so that they are eligible to
 \nenroll at the intermediate level or above. The South Asia Center request
 s applications from qualified undergraduates\nand graduate students for FL
 AS Summer fellowships.&nbsp\; The South Asia Summer\n2016 FLAS program pro
 vides for tuition up to $5\,000 and a stipend of $2\,500 for\nintensive (6
  or 8 weeks) study in the United States or abroad at the\nintermediate or 
 advanced level in any South Asian language at approved South\nAsian langua
 ge programs.&nbsp\; In addition to\napplying for FLAS\, students must also
  apply for the summer language program of\ntheir choice: usually these are
  the American Institute of Indian Studies (AIIS)\nSummer Language Program 
 (http://www.indiastudies.org/) for study in India\nor The South Asian Stud
 ies Language Institute (SASLI)\, held at the University\nof Wisconsin (htt
 p://sasli.wisc.edu/). Summer\nFLAS can also be given to incoming graduate 
 students at the introductory level\nto study intensive language at SASLI.&
