 p\;Academic Year 2016-17The Foreign Language and Area Studies Fellowship (
 FLAS) Program\, funded by the U.S. Department of Education under Title VI\
 , assists students in pursuing training in order to acquire a high level o
 f competence in one or more languages critical to national needs of the Un
 ited States\, and a fuller understanding of the areas\, regions\, or count
 ries in which that language is commonly used.&nbsp\; The Moynihan Institut
 e of Global Affairs at Syracuse University's Maxwell School houses the Sou
 th Asia Center through which these fellowships are administered. &nbsp\;El
 igibility is restricted to undergraduates and graduates who are U.S. citiz
 ens or permanent residents AND who are enrolled full-time in a program of 
 study at Syracuse University that includes intensive foreign language and 
 area studies coursework or dissertation work that is enhanced by foreign l
 anguage training.&nbsp\; Undergraduate applicants must have completed at l
 east a year of college-level coursework in the language of study so that t
 hey are eligible to enroll at the intermediate level or above.The South As
 ia Center requests applications from qualified undergraduate and graduate 
 students who wish to enhance their knowledge of a South Asian language to 
 complement their current program of study. Academic year FLAS fellowships 
 at Syracuse University are awarded for Hindi-Urdu. Academic year 2016-17 f
 ellowships consist of a scholarship of $10\,000 towards the cost of tuitio
 n and $5\,000 towards living expenses for undergraduates\; graduate studen
 ts receive 24 credits of tuition and a stipend of $15\,000.&nbsp\; The app
