DESCRIPTION:Speaker:&nbsp\; Baobao ZhangThis chapter synthesizes and discus
ses research on public\nopinion toward artificial intelligence (AI). Under
standing citizens' and\nconsumers' attitudes toward AI is important from a
normative standpoint because\nthe public is a major stakeholder in shapin
g the future of the technology and\nshould have a voice in policy discussi
ons. Furthermore\, the research could help\nus anticipate future political
and consumer behavior. Survey data worldwide\nshow that the public is inc
 reasingly aware of AI\; however\, they -- unlike AI\nresearchers -- tend t
o anthropomorphize AI. Demographic differences correlate\nwith trust in AI
in the abstract: those living in East Asia have higher levels\nof trust i
n AI\, while women and those of lower socioeconomic status across\ndiffere
nt regions have lower levels of trust. Surveys that focus on particular\nA
 I applications\, including facial recognition technology\, personalization
\nalgorithms\, lethal autonomous weapons\, and workplace automation\, add
complexity\nto this research topic. I conclude this chapter by recommendin
g three new\ndirections for future studies: understanding 1) how instituti
onal reputation\naffects trust in AI\, 2) how increasing one's experience
with and knowledge\nabout AI affects attitudes\, and 3) how attitudes towa
 rd AI shapes individuals'\nbehavior.\n\n&nbsp\; \n\n&nbsp\;\n\n&nbsp\;\n\n
