DESCRIPTION:Moynihan European Research Centers and the Department of Politi
cal Science Present:Turkuler IsikselAssistant Professor at the Department
of Political Science at Columbia UniversityMarket Freedoms and Constitutio
nalism in the European UnionDr. Isiksel’s talk will examine the status of
fundamental rights norms within the European Union's supranational legal s
ystem\, arguing that the concept of “fundamental freedoms” illustrates the
EU's distinctive constitutional logic. Although the protection of individ
ual rights is a prominent element of modern constitutional rule\, the EU's
regime of fundamental freedoms promotes a narrower goal\, namely that of
market integration. The talk is based on Dr. Isiksel’s book manuscript\, “
Europe's Functional Constitution: A Theory of Constitutionalism Beyond the
  State.”Lunch will be provided.
