DESCRIPTION:“Genocide &amp\; Mass Atrocity Prevention:&nbsp\; Emerging Infr
astructures and Practices.” Guest Speaker:&nbsp\;Owen Pell is a Partner at
White &amp\; Case LLP. The last 15-20 years has seen the field of genocid
e and mass atrocity prevention emerge from the broader field of human righ
ts studies.&nbsp\; Prevention studies aim to move beyond how and which rig
hts are defined and recognized under international law\, and crisis interv
ention.&nbsp\; By contrast\, prevention studies focuses on better identify
ing\, measuring\, and interdicting or interrupting the processes which res
ult in outbreaks of genocide and mass atrocity crimes\, and on making soci
eties more resilient in preventing outbreaks of genocide or mass atrocity
violence.&nbsp\; This new focus\, which has paralleled the UN’s focus on t
he Responsibility to Protect\, has begun to foster new infrastructure for
addressing genocide prevention\, and new practices for engaging within gov
 ernment\, among governments\, and\, among corporations\, civil society\, a
nd governments.&nbsp\;&nbsp\;Conversations in Conflict Studies is a weekly
educational speaker series for students\, faculty\, and the community. Th
e series\, sponsored by PARCC\, draws its speakers from Syracuse Universit
y faculty\, national and international scholars and activists\, and PhD st
udents. Pizza is served. Follow us on Twitter @PARCCatMaxwell\, tweet #Con
