DESCRIPTION:Selina Gallo-Cruz\, associate professor of sociology\, will pre
sent "From Rape to Ecocide\, Feminists Respond to Nonviolence."In this tal
k\, I will present an in-depth\nanalysis of feminist writings in response
to and in engagement with nonviolence\nfor issues of importance to women’s
liberation and peace and justice movements:\nissues of power and empowerm
ent among liberation movements\; sexual harassment\,\nassault\, rape and v
iolence against women\; militarization and war\; and systemic\nforms of vi
olence and exploitation found in racism\, colonization\,\nneo-imperialism
and ecocide.I draw on feminist activist writings from\na particular era in
which women were explicitly addressing the relationship\nbetween feminism
and nonviolence\, beginning in 1971 and developing through\n2000.Many of
the contributors were actively\ninvolved in both movements while others st
ood firmly in feminist movement but\noffered substantive responses to the
contradictions\, shortcomings and\noversights of the nonviolence movements
as not yet fully supportive of women’s\nliberation among the many forms o
 f liberation it touted.
