EconomicsUniversity of California\, Irvine Monopsonistic Labor Markets and
International Trade \n\nThis project studies the impact of trade on wage
inequality\nand welfare when the labor market is monopsonistic. Firm heter
ogeneity in\nproductivity along with workers' idiosyncratic preferences fo
r different firms\ngenerate between-firm wage inequality for workers with
identical skills. If\nmonopsony power is high\, inequality increases monot
onically with trade\nliberalization. The model features a novel welfare ch
annel of workers' “love of\nfirm variety." Trade liberalization provides a
dditional welfare gains\nthrough the firm-variety channel when monopsony p
ower is high but detracts from\nwelfare gains when monopsony power is low.
