DESCRIPTION:&nbsp\;\n\nThe Department of Anthropology\nPresents:\n\nDr. And
rea Muehlebach from the University of Toronto\, Department of Anthropology
  will give a talk\ntitled “Water\, Politics\, and the&nbsp\; Democratic Im
 agination in Italy”\n\nIn a\nhistorically&nbsp\;unprecedented move in 2011
\, 27 million Italians rejected the\ncommodification&nbsp\; of water and i
nsisted that it be conceptualized as a\n“bene comune” (a&nbsp\;common good
). This talk explores Naples as a site where\nwater has become a&nbsp\;veh
icle for novel experiments in citizenship\,\ndemocratic&nbsp\; participati
on\, and resource management. It is a city\nwhere&nbsp\;new forms of polit
ical imagination have taken root and where water\nas right and “commons” e
xist in tension with dominant ideologies of the&nbsp\;propertied\nindividu
al. I thus ask how water has become a vehicle for&nbsp\;Italians to\npropo
se designs for a better life. How are these designs&nbsp\;fairing in a\nco
untry reeling from the effects of austerity and democratic&nbsp\;deficit?
How\ndo the meanings and materialities of water impact the very horizons o
f\nenvironmental and human possibility that citizens are proposing?\n\n\n
