 he Foreign Language and Area Studies Fellowship (FLAS) Program\, funded by
  the U.S. Departmentof Education under Title VI\, assists students in purs
 uing training in order to acquire a high level of competence in one or mor
 elanguages critical to national needs of the United States\, and a fuller 
 understanding of the areas\, regions\, or countries in whichthat language 
 is commonly used. The Moynihan Institute of Global Affairs at Syracuse Uni
 versity's Maxwell School houses theSouth Asia Center through which these f
 ellowships are administered.Eligibility is restricted to undergraduates an
 d graduates who are U.S. citizens or permanent residents AND who are enrol
 ledfull-time in a program of study at Syracuse University that includes in
 tensive foreign language and area studies coursework ordissertation work t
 hat is enhanced by foreign language training. Graduate students pursuing P
 hDs must have atleastintermediate proficiency. Professional graduate stude
 nts wanting to take language courses at the introductory level willhave th
 eir cases examined on a case-by-case basis by the U.S. Department of Educa
 tion. Undergraduate students withsufficient prior training to take an inte
 rmediate or advanced level of Hindi or Urdu language are also eligible.Aca

 a Center requests applications from qualified undergraduate and graduate s
 tudents who wish to enhance theirknowledge of a South Asian language to co
 mplement their current program of study. Academic year FLAS fellowships at
 Syracuse University are awarded for Hindi-Urdu. Academic year 2017-18 fell
 owships consist of a scholarship of $10\,000towards the cost of tuition an
 d $5\,000 towards living expenses for undergraduates\; graduate students r
 eceive 24 credits oftuition and a stipend of $15\,000. The application\, a
