  Tierney is a clinician-investigator focusing on the application of inform
 ation technology in medicine and its effects on the quality\, efficiency\,
  and costs of health care. He is also a practicing hospital physician. He 
 is director of research for the Indiana University Kenya Program where he 
 and his collaborators implemented the first ambulatory electronic medical 
 record system in sub-Saharan Africa that supports care and research for Ke
 nyans with HIV/AIDS. He also co-directs ResNet\, a primary care practice-b
 ased research network of 27 inner-city and suburban primary care practice 
 sites in central Indiana. He has published more than 300 peer-reviewed art
 icles and is a member of the Institute of Medicine.The Lourie Memorial Lec
