DESCRIPTION:Speaker:&nbsp\; Kevin CrowstonCognitive computing platforms suc
h as IBM Watson or Azure\nMachine Learning Studio are attracting increasin
g interest from organizations\nthat want to harness recent developments in
&nbsp\;artificial intelligence in\nconnection with their own data. Frequen
tly\, those organizations rely on\nplatform-specific development and consu
lting services offered by the platform\nprovider. Those&nbsp\;sourcing rel
 ationships involve a novel technology\, a\nplatform-based ecosystem\, and
a hyped vision of the future. It remains open how\nthis arrangement makes
the cognitive- computing&nbsp\;projects like or unlike\nother information
systems development sourcing projects. Employing sensemaking\nas a theoret
ical lens to analyze collaboration between IBM and 17\nclient&nbsp\;compan
 ies\, this study identifies data\, technology\, project\, and\ncontext as
four core target areas of sensemaking in cognitive computing\nprojects. It
describes typical sequences of&nbsp\;sensemaking within and across\nthe a
reas delivering a more dynamic understanding of how meanings influence\nea
ch other in those projects. Finally\, it shows that mindfulness is selecti
ve\nin&nbsp\;terms of focus and differs between collaboration partners. Th
e insights\nsuggest that cognitive computing projects need to embrace sens
 emaking as a core\naspect of progress\, holistically&nbsp\;employ mindfuln
ess\, and openly engage\nwith risks and chances related to the technology.
