s present Techno-Populism: The New Logic of European Politics A Talk by Ca
rlo Invernizzi Accetti\, Assistant Professor of Political Science\, The Ci
ty College of New York&nbsp\; European party politics has traditionally be
en understood in terms of a struggle between left and right ideological po
les. Yet\, recent developments have seen the emergence of a variety of act
ors and movements that do not seem to fit these categories\, from Italy’s
 Five-Star Movement\, to Spain’s Ciudadanos\, and France’s La République en
Marche. In different ways\, all these new actors and movements combine an
anti-establishment ‘populist’ appeal with ‘technocratic’ claims to expert
ise. As such\, they point to a new structuring logic of contemporary Europ
ean politics\, whereby the combination of populist and technocratic elemen
ts replaces the ideological struggle between left and right. Carlo Inverni
zzi Accetti will examine some of the causes\, as well as potential consequ
