What you need to know before applying:
The CCE Program is designed for students who combine academic excellence in the home major with a demonstrated desire to engage in a project of real-world significance through civic leadership.
Unlike the traditional social science majors, students must
apply to be accepted into the CCE major. If you are ready to apply, please
click on the section to the left entitled, “The Application.” There you will
find the application materials and links to the application forms for both high
school seniors and current Syracuse University freshman and sophomores. If you would still like more
information, please read below.
Who can apply?
first-years, current first-years, and first semester sophomores
at Syracuse University are eligible to apply.

You do not need to have chosen a home major to apply to CCE but will have to choose another major before graduating from SU.
When can I apply?
The program has two entry points: the beginning of a
student’s first year at Syracuse University, and during their first two years on campus.
The first year entry point allows prospective high-school seniors to apply to the Program at the same
time they apply to Syracuse University; those accepted will enter the program
upon matriculation. They will also benefit from a robust schedule of social and
academic events that are designed to build a sense of esprit de corps among the
cohort. You will be able to choose CCE from the drop down menu on the Common Application and will be required to write an additional essay to be considered for CCE.
Students already at Syracuse
University may apply for admission to the program during their first year, for matriculation at the beginning of the second. Please note: Students choosing the latter route must
complete the First Year Foundations requirements outlined in the Program Requirements section under Lower Division Experience.
What kind of student succeeds in the
The Maxwell Program in Citizenship and Civic Engagement
prides itself on having a diverse group of students from all different
backgrounds and majors as a part of its population. Any and every student is a
good fit! However, we find that those students who have particular interests in
making a difference in their community, providing social good, and being
civically involved are most attracted to and succeed most readily in our major.
