Fractional exhaled nitric oxide amongst high altitude indigenous populations

Nitric oxide (NO) is produced in the human lung by nitric oxide synthase (NOS), with increased levels reflecting airway inflammation. Although the presence of nitric oxide in exhaled air was first described in 1991, detail physiological pathways of exhaled nitric oxide are still unclear. It has been reported by the investigators that exhaled nitric oxide is higher in subjects with various obstructive pulmonary diseases. However, information on exhaled nitric oxide among highlander natives are not available for many high altitude populations, where pulmonary diseases can be fatal.
