Il Divo is an award-winning movie written and directed by Paolo Sorrentino (2014 winner of Academy Award for his The Great Beauty and HBO’s The Young Pope). The movie portrays the career of seven-time Italian prime minister Giulio Andreotti (1919-2013), who was suspected of involvement in a murder of a journalist, and was tried for Mafia ties.
The Guardian film critic says:
This is a deeply strange and utterly hypnotic film, almost traumatized with its own information overload and by the frenetic accumulation of data pointing to one conclusion: that Italy's politicians have tainted the country with corruption and secret shame. Toni Servillo's Andreotti is a macabre masterpiece.
Professor Glyn Morgan will present a 15-minute introduction that situates the movie in the Italian political context. Professor Estévez-Abe will chair a post-movie discussion session.
