Peace in Colombia: Problems and Prospects in Rural Antioquia

Guest Speaker: Zachary Krahmer, Photographer and Filmmaker

Description: The Colombian National Government and the Armed Revolutionary Forces of Colombia (FARC-EP) ratified a final peace agreement 22 months ago, outlining a timeline for demobilization, transitional justice, and social/economic reintegration of 7,000 armed combatants, formally ending the 53-year civil war. A failure by the government to properly implement the accords is threatening to derail the peace process in rural areas of the country. Zachary spent several months throughout Ituango in 2016 and 2017, completing a variety of journalism and photography projects related to the demobilization process. He will discuss his work and contextualize the return of armed actors and dissident groups in the region.

Conversations in Conflict Studies is a weekly educational speaker series for students, faculty, and the community. The series, sponsored by PARCC, draws its speakers from Syracuse University faculty, national and international scholars and activists, and PhD students. Pizza is served. Be sure to check out the full list of speakers.
