Please join the Maxwell School, Washington DC for What I’ve Learned, a monthly speaker series hosted by Assistant Dean Mark R. Jacobson. This month our guest is William Taylor, former U.S. Ambassador in Kyiv, Ukraine (2006-2009) and charge d’affairs in 2019. Ambassador Taylor, will discuss his experiences from West Point to Vietnam and Capitol Hill, as well as the challenges of diplomatic work dealing with a host of complex issues in politically sensitive situations in Europe, the Middle East, and Afghanistan. The conversation will also include a discussion of the current state of U.S. policy in Ukraine and Russia and the challenges facing the current Administration.

William Taylor is vice president, Strategic Stability and Security at the U.S. Institute of Peace. In 2019 he served as the charge d’affairs in Ukraine, having previously served as Ambassador. Previously, he served in key diplomatic roles including as the US representative to the Mideast Quartet, the director of the Iraq Reconstruction Management Office, and the coordinator of international and US assistance to Afghanistan. He also served as the coordinator of US assistance to the former USSR and Eastern Europe. Earlier in his career Taylor served on the staff of Sen. Bill Bradley. He is a West Point Graduate, holds an MA from Harvard, and served as an infantry officer in Vietnam.
