Maxwell hosts another delegation of Indian Customs Officers
Maxwell’s Executive Education programs expands its partnership with the Indian Revenue Service Customs & Central Excise Service by hosting another delegation of senior officers attending a Tax Policy program this May. The program has been co-developed by the Maxwell School of Citizenship and Public Affairs, USA, and the Indian School of Business with support from the National Academy of Customs Excise and Narcotics (NACEN). The four week program which began with two weeks at the Indian School of Business is followed by one week in the U.S. and one week in Canada. The previous delegation of IRS officers successfully completed this same program in late April at Maxwell.
This particular training program has been tailored to develop officers’ understanding of tax policy and leadership issues. The two weeks in the United States and Canada focus on sessions led by academics, practitioners, and policy makers who share their experience of various policy processes. After attending classes in Syracuse, the group travels to the port of entry at Buffalo to observe commercial operations at the second largest land border crossing between Canada & USA. The group then proceeds to Ottawa where they interact with officials from the Canada Border Services Agency (CBSA) and Canada Revenue Agency (CRA). The next stop for the delegation is a visit to the Montreal marine port where they observed customs clearance and inspection techniques. The international component concludes with a meetings with the U.S. Customs and Border Protection in New York City.
Maxwell was entrusted with providing this program keeping in mind the school’s history and experience of working with Indian government officers. Maxwell’s connection with India dates back to the 1950s, when India’s first Prime Minister asked the school’s former dean, Paul Appleby, to recommend civil service reforms and today Maxwell’s Indian alumni network includes senior government officials serving in every state.
