Beginning in mid-June, the Maxwell School will host 25 of Africa’s bright, emerging public management leaders for a six-week Leadership Institute, sponsored by the U.S. Department of State. 

The relationship between the Maxwell School of Citizenship and Public Affairs and the government and people of India dates back more than 70 years, with thousands of senior officials taking advantage of Executive Education’s training and degree programs, and others study through some of the most prestigious fellowships offered.

Executive Education hosted 12 master of public administration and 13 master of business administration students from the faculty of economics and management at East China Normal University (ECNU) from Oct. 4 to Oct. 10 for the program, public management and leadership.

With a robust orientation behind them, eleven Hubert H. Humphrey Fellows from 10 emerging democracies and developing countries have embarked on a 10-month program involving graduate study, professional development and cultural exchange.

The Discipline and Practice of Strategy was designed “to give participants knowledge of strategy as a specific discipline, an awareness of its application to the special class of challenges that truly warrant its exercise, and a toolkit of how to think strategically, formulate strategies and act with strategic coherence.”

The Defense Comptroller Program at Syracuse University educates and trains the Department of Defense’s financial managers at the Martin J. Whitman School of Management where students receive an MBA, and at the Maxwell School where students earn an E.M.P.A.

Eleven Executive Education students, fellows or scholars presented at Peer to Peer forums during this academic year. The sessions included a 15- to 20-minute presentation followed by a robust question-and-answer session. Presenters came from across Maxwell’s Executive Education programs, including the Humphrey Fellows cohort.

The University Professor and Phanstiel Chair in Leadership was recognized for his public service roles, including four presidential appointments. 

Niño Raymond Alvina, executive director for the Bureau of Local Government Finance for the Philippines’ Department of Finance, is the fourth Humphrey Fellow from the Philippines to study at the Maxwell School. And he continues a legacy of connections with Maxwell that intersected with his own career aspirations shortly after graduating from the University of Philippines in 2004.

Next month, Aibek Kabyldin will be among the latest midcareer professionals from Kazakhstan to finish a one-year research and academic program through the school’s Visiting Executive Scholar (VES) partnership with that country. The program, which debuted about a year ago, links the Maxwell School with employees of the Academy of Public Administration (APA), under the president of the Republic of Kazakhstan.

This was the 11^th year the Maxwell School has hosted, and Executive Education has administered, the “Leadership and Governance During Times of Crisis” workshop for Humphrey Fellows, midcareer international professionals pursuing professional enrichment and non-degree graduate study at designated U.S. campuses. 

The Maxwell School of Citizenship and Public Affairs is proud to announce its selection as an institute partner for the 2023 Mandela Washington Fellowship for Young African Leaders. Beginning in mid-June, the Maxwell School will host 25 of Africa’s bright, emerging public management leaders for a six-week Leadership Institute, sponsored by the U.S. Department of State. 

The program, which ran Jan. 23-27, was titled “U.S. Government and Politics: Policy and Decision Making” and offered participants an overview of U.S. political institutions, elections and federal systems; and touched on some of the most fractious issues facing U.S. policymakers today, including guns, immigration and the role of media.

Fourteen Humphrey fellows, midcareer professionals from 13 countries, attended the four-day U.S. State Department Global Leadership Forum in October in Washington, D.C., an early highlight of the 10-month Humphrey Fellowship, for which Syracuse University is one of 13 host campuses.

A group of 12 midcareer professionals seeking to make first-ever campus memories and connect with new faces participated in the Maxwell School’s Online Executive Master of Public Administration (E.M.P.A.) Immersion Weekend, which took place during Orange Central.

Students in the program complete coursework to earn an executive master of public administration degree from the Maxwell School of Citizenship and Public Affairs and a master of business administration degree with a concentration in business analytics from the Martin J. Whitman School of Management.

Syracuse University, jointly with Cybertrust America, NIST Global Community Technology Consortium (GCTC), US Ignite, and Global Cyber Alliance, has graduated its first cohort enrolled in the professional course aimed at equipping leaders in government, academia and the private sector with foundational knowledge and skills for successful smart city initiatives while expanding their professional network.

This was the eighth time Maxwell has hosted a Leadership Institute as a part of the Mandela Washington Fellowship. This year's six-week program included 700 young leaders from sub-Saharan Africa working with 27 institutions across the United States.

At the end of the spring 2022 National Security Management course (NSM), 46 participants gave a group presentation addressing one of the most pressing issues of our time: How should NATO recast its strategic posture against the backdrop of Russia’s invasion of Ukraine?
