GIS and Geospatial Technologies

GIS and geospatial technologies incorporates a broad range of theory and applications to address real-world problems. It encompasses principles, procedures, and tools for collecting, analyzing, visualizing, disseminating, and understanding information about the earth, its inhabitants, and physical processes using information technologies.

Among its more prominent components are the GPS (global positioning system) for collecting coordinate data and facilitating navigation; RS (remote sensing) for the rapid collection of information about land cover and other earth features; and GIS (geographic information systems) for the storage, retrieval, display, and analysis of spatial data.

Geospatial scientists apply principles of systematic observation and empirical analysis to studies of data quality, internet and mobile mapping, map design, public participation GIS, big data, and societal impacts. Geography faculty in this cluster conduct research on the geodesign framework for architectural design and urban planning, the history of cartographic innovation, land cover and the visualization of historical land change, and public participation GIS for community action.
