Applying to the Graduate Program

Welcome to the Department of Geography application page.  We offer both Master’s and Doctoral degrees in Geography; however, to apply to the Ph.D. program you must have a Master’s degree completed by the time of matriculation.   Our admission cycle is for Fall entrance only. We do not accept entry into the program in January. The deadline for applications for entrance in the 2017-2018 academic year is January 5, 2017.  For information not available on this or the Graduate School  websites, or if you have questions about the program, please contact Geography Director of Graduate Studies, Dr. Tom Perreault, at  taperrea@maxwell.syr.edu.

Procedures for Applying

Step One 
Go the Graduate School  website to start the application process and review the general information and guidelines for getting started. 

Step Two 
Complete The Graduate School's online application.  You will need to create an account through which you can electronically upload all the necessary documents listed below:  
          1. Official GRE score report 
          2. Transcripts from previous institutions 
          3. Three letters of reference 
          4. Statement of intent. This should be approximately 500 words, and describe your general academic plans, including your interests in geography, why you decided to select Syracuse, and what you hope to study here. Specific topics within these areas would be especially helpful. The Ph.D. applicant should identify one or more potential dissertation field areas of interest, and identify certain faculty members with whom you wish to work.
          5. An application fee form. 
          6. For international students only:  
               a. an SUIA form (for VISA purposes) will be generated after you have completed the application. 
                   (example SUIA form)              

               b. TOEFL scores 

Electronic submission will greatly shorten the time from your submission of your documents to the receipt of your application in the geography department. However, if you prefer, you may mail all the above documents, or any supplementary materials to be included in your application package, directly to the Graduate School at:

Final FAQs

No documents need be sent directly to the geography department. The graduate school will forward all your materials to us after they have been received.

All materials must be received by the graduate school on or before January 5, 2016.

The Geography Department will not evaluate your application until all your materials have been submitted.
