Memorial Scholarship

Karola Castañeda-García

Karola Castaneda

The 2020 recipient of the Wanetik Scholarship is Karola Castañeda-García, Dec '20.  Like Matt, Karola is majoring in International Relations; she also has a minor in Spanish. Like Matt, she is a member of a Greek organization – Delta Gamma service fraternity – and very engaged in our campus community, particularly as Treasurer of the recognized student organization Las Naranjas (The Oranges/Spanish Club) and a member of our Model United Nations Team.  Like Matt, Karola is a sports fan – SU basketball as well as the Buffalo Bills football and Buffalo Sabres hockey teams.  She also volunteers with the Syracuse Spanish Action League’s youth theater and as a legal intern at the law office of José Pérez.  What stands out most about Karola is her joie de vivre: she has an effervescent personality, is friendly, warm-hearted, and fun loving – again, very like Matt.  Karola is originally from Cuba; her family came to the United States when she was two years old. They first lived in Michigan, then moved to the Syracuse area, where she attended Jamesville Dewitt high school. This summer she will be preparing for her citizenship exam and her LSAT, as she hopes to attend law school and have a career in the area of immigration law using her bilingual skills.
