2016 Recipient of the Matthew Ross Wanetik
The 2016 recipient of the Wanetik Award
is junior Francis Morency ’17. Like Matt,
Francis was a member of the International Relations Learning Community in his
first year here at Syracuse and is now majoring in International Relations; he
also served as a Resident Advisor for the IRLC in his sophomore year.
Like Matt, he also studied abroad in Strasbourg as a junior, where Francis
interned at the Council of Europe. Also like Matt, Francis is a member of
a fraternity – Alpha Kappa Psi – and he is a basketball and baseball fan – he
follows the Miami Heat and the Florida Marlins rather than the 76ers and the
Phillies. In terms of his personality, Francis also demonstrates the kind of joie
de vivre that Matt did.
Francis is from
Miami, Florida, and has three older brothers and an older sister; his parents are originally from Haiti. Francis is a first-generation
college student and a POSSE Scholar. After graduation, Francis hopes to travel,
perhaps joining the US Peace Corps or Teach for America, then law school, and
ultimately to have a career in public service or the non-profit sector
practicing law related to human rights and immigration.
