Boren Awards & African Flagship Languages Initiative

Boren Awards, an initiative of the National Security Education Program, provide unique funding opportunities for U.S. undergraduate and graduate students to study in Africa, Asia, Central & Eastern Europe, Eurasia, Latin America, and the Middle East, where they can add important international and language components to their educations.  Applications for the 2016-2017 scholarship season will be due in February 2016.  For more information, please visit www.borenawards.org.

Funding is available for Boren Scholars and Fellows to study one of the following languages domestically through the African Flagship Languages Initiative (AFLI) prior to commencing their overseas Boren funded programs.

  • Akan/Twi
  • French (requires intermediate-high or above proficiency)
  • Swahili
  • Portuguese
  • Wolof
  • Zulu

Foreign Language and Area Studies (FLAS)

The Foreign Language and Area Studies (FLAS) Fellowships program provides allocations of academic year and summer fellowships to undergraduate students and graduate students undergoing training in modern foreign languages and related area or international studies. FLAS fellowships can be used for language training domestically as well as in Africa.
