South Asia Center
Syracuse University's South Asia Center supports teaching and research on South Asia:Afghanistan, Bangladesh, Bhutan, India, Maldives, Nepal, Pakistan and Sri Lanka.
The center coordinates a variety of colloquia, films, cultural programs and other activities and participates in collaboration with Cornell University to form a consortium with a focus on the research and scholarship of the countries in the South Asia region.
The South Asia Center is a United States Department of Education Title VI National Resource Center.

South Asia Study Opportunities at Syracuse University and Abroad
Language and Undergraduate Studies
The South Asian Studies minor focuses on the cultures, politics, history, arts and current events of South Asia. Hindi is one of the national languages of India, and Hindi-Urdu is the third most spoken language in the world.
Graduate Studies
This Certificate of Advanced Study program gives students the opportunity to supplement their degree with an interdisciplinary approach to learning about the cultures, politics, history, arts and current events of this region. Graduate students may also choose the East and South Asia career track in Maxwell's international relations graduate degree program.
Study Abroad Programs
Syracuse University offers a number of options for students who wish to study in India, including several short-term programs.
South Asia Center's Foreign Language and Area Studies Fellowships
Syracuse University graduate and undergraduate students committed to the intensive study of South Asia are eligible to apply for a Foreign Language and Areas Studies (FLAS) fellowship, allocated from the US Department of Education.
Academic Year FLAS awards for a campus-supported South Asian language program provide up to 24 credits of tuition and a stipend of $20,000 for graduate students or up to $10,000 in tuition and $5,000 in stipend for undergraduate students. Summer FLAS awards provide up to $5,000 in tuition and a stipend of $2,500 for intensive study of any South Asian language at approved language programs.
Maxwell-India Tradition
The South Asia Center is part of a long tradition of engagement between Syracuse University and India. Syracuse University’s Maxwell School has hosted thousands of senior government of India officials in its Executive Education, advanced certificate and degree programs since the 1950s. In addition to the Maxwell School’s exclusive programming with the government of India, the Executive Education program also facilitates over a dozen advanced certificates, two master’s degrees and numerous customized training opportunities that build upon its history of close collaborations with government and academic institutions—both internationally and throughout the United States.

Muslim Student Life aims to create an inclusive community and to engage in sincere reflections that result in religious, intellectual and social growth through educational programs and spiritual guidance based on Islamic principles.
A project of the Mahindra Foundation of India, Nanhi Kali supports education for underprivileged girls, raising funds to sponsor uniforms, school supplies and tuition costs for girls in India who are otherwise unable to attend elementary or middle school on their own.
This student organization seks to promote classical art forms of the Indian subcontinent, increase awareness about different aspects of Indian heritage and inspire the young mind to imbibe the values embedded in it.
This Association provides an interactive and safe environment for all students, of both South Asian and non-South Asian background, to explore the vastness of South Asia through events, including movies, music, dance, celebrations and meetings that focus on social and political issues.
Join the team of students and faculty on their 3-week research expedition to the foot of the highest mountain on Earth, Mount Everest, as they learn how the human body responds to high altitude. Centered on the legendary Base Camp Mount Everest trek in Nepal, students collect physiological data as part of a field experiment meant to demonstrate how humans respond physiologically to the challenges of high altitude.
A metalsmith and art historian, Laura Marsolek was a 2018-19 Luce Scholar in residence at Mehrangarh Museum Trust in Jodhpur, India where she studied decorative arts and jewelry traditions at the Marwar court, while also apprenticing with two local jewelers in Jodhpur. This blog documents her research and experience during her studies.

Outreach for Educators
In the K-12 Classroom
The South Asia Center provides outreach support for K-12 educators through workshops and classroom visits and by providing resources online that can assist teachers in designing programs that enrich student’s knowledge of South Asia.
For Higher Education Faculty
In collaboration with Cornell University's Einaudi Center, the South Asia Center supports professional development program opportunities for faculty at community colleges and four-year schools of education.
South Asia Book Award
To encourage and commend authors and publishers who produce an ever increasing number of high-quality children's and young adult books that portray South Asia or South Asians living abroad, and to provide librarians and teachers with recommendations for educational use, the South Asia National Outreach Consortium (SANOC) offers a yearly book award to outstanding works on South Asia.
The South Asia Program works with SANOC to administer the South Asia Book Award Program. SANOC's mission is to enhance K-16 outreach programming by building a stronger network and collaboration among the South Asia National Resource Centers, and institutions with South Asia programming, across the United States.
