Performing the Ramayana in America

america1At Peninsula High in Gig Harbor, Washington, drama teacher Nancy Wilkinson, NEH participant in 1997, brought the Ramayana to life for American audiences in her production of "Tales from India." Using the opportunity to teach as well as to entertain, "Tales from India" spoke of family life, heroes and demons and battles, and ultimately of universal truths. Following on a centuries-old tradition of performing the Ramayana, performances such as this one are an excellent way by which to bring other cultures to life for American audiences.

Check the Syracuse University South Asia Center Video library for a tape of this performance available for borrowing.
