the Politics of Consumption in Bihar, India
On Tuesday, April 18th, the South Asia Center is pleased to host Hayden Kantor to discuss Masculine Appetites: Class, Labor, and the Politics of Consumption in Bihar, India. Given the persistent
insecurity that marks life in rural Bihar, India, how do people gain bodily
strength and a measure of pleasure in their eating habits? In this talk, Hayden
Kantor examines how rural men express their masculine identity through
their consumption practices. Specifically, meat and alcohol are at the center
of spirited local debates about men's entitlements and obligations. Here Kantor
considers how notions proper comportment are contested and vary according to
caste and class. The lecture will take place in 341 Eggers Hall at 12:30PM.
