Sreekumar Nellickappilly to Discuss: Patient Autonomy and Agency: An Overview of the Indian Healthcare Scenario
On Tuesday, March 20, the South Asia Center has the fortune of hosting of Sreekumar Nellickappilly, a Fulbright
Professional Excellence Fellow.
Ever since the individual human subject
became the epicenter of moral deliberations, patient autonomy acquired primacy
over the other bioethics principles like beneficence, non-maleficence and
justice. But such individualism does not match with the cultural values of many
non-western countries like India, where group identities acquire primacy over
individual identity. Mr. Nellickappilly will use his paper as an attempt to
problematize the demand for patient autonomy from the context of such a
scenario.
